While you are learning the back carry, have a helper and/or practice over a bed or couch. This is one method of getting a child to your back. Place the straps under the child’s armpits and hold very tightly. Use the straps to hoist the child up to your back.

Hoist the child up onto the back over one shoulder.

Lean forward to help support the child. Still holding the straps tightly, separate the two straps so that one is over each shoulder.

Spread out the straps over each shoulder. Still hold tightly onto the straps.

Place the long straps securely between your knees and reach for the hip straps. The hip straps go under the child’s legs and clip in the front.

Pull down on the straps and bring them under your armpits towards your back. Tie the straps either over child’s back or under the child’s bottom in a square knot. Before tying, you can give a little hop to take up any slack in the straps.

Backpack style straps

Straps can also be crossed in front before tying around the back under baby's bottom or across baby's back.

Getting down

One easy way to get the child down is to release them onto a couch or into someone’s arms.

Even big kids like to be carried! 5 years old & 45 pounds
